Flooding with water vs flooding with fuel
These are two different problems, even though drivers sometimes use "flooding" for both. This guide explains how to treat fuel flooding primarily.
Fuel flooding happens when too much fuel builds up in the combustion chamber. It's usually caused by how the car was started or a fault in the fuel or ignition system. It's generally straightforward to clear and rarely causes lasting damage.
Water flooding, also called hydrolocking, happens when water enters the combustion chamber, usually from driving through deep water. Water doesn't compress like an air and fuel mixture, so if the piston tries to compress it, this can bend the connecting rod or crack the engine block. Hydrolocking is far more serious than fuel flooding and often needs significant repair work. If you suspect water has entered your engine, don't try to start it. Get the car checked by a mechanic first.
Can you flood a diesel engine?
Yes. Diesel engines are built differently to petrol engines, but they can still flood. If diesel fuel overfills the combustion chamber, it won't ignite properly, causing the same starting and running problems as a flooded petrol engine.
How does an engine get flooded?
Several things can cause engine flooding, from how you start the car to underlying mechanical faults.
- Pumping the accelerator:?Pumping the accelerator pedal when starting the car can introduce too much fuel into the combustion chamber, making it difficult for the engine to ignite.?
- Cold weather:?Freezing temperatures affect the fuel’s ability to turn into vapour, more fuel stays liquid, pooling in the combustion chamber, making the engine harder to start.
- Sensor issues:?A faulty oxygen sensor can cause the engine control unit to deliver more fuel into the combustion chamber than necessary.??
- Leaky fuel injector:?If your fuel injector is leaking it can end up continuously dripping fuel into the combustion chamber, even when the engine is off which can cause flooding.??
- Ignition system issues:?Faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or other ignition system components can lead to unburned fuel accumulating in the combustion chamber.?
- Clogged air filters:?Clogged air filters restrict airflow, potentially stopping the air from reaching the fuel and flooding the engine.?
- Fuel system problems: Issues with the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, or fuel lines can result in excessive fuel entering the combustion chamber.?
- Stalling and restarting:?If you restart an engine straight after it stalls, the combustion chamber may still hold fuel from the failed start. Restarting adds more fuel on top, causing flooding.?
Will a flooded engine fix itself?
A flooded engine won’t clear on its own. The excess fuel needs to burn off or drain away before the engine can start and run normally. Leaving the car for a few minutes lets some fuel evaporate, but you’ll usually need to follow the steps below to clear the flood completely. If the engine floods repeatedly, an underlying fault such as a leaking injector or faulty sensor is the likely cause, which needs a mechanic to fix it.
How to fix a flooded engine
To fix a flooded engine the excess fuel needs to be cleared from the combustion chamber to allow your car to reset. Follow these simple steps to fix a flooded engine:?
